Mulligan Mosaics Nonet
An off-shoot of the Mulligan Mosaics Big Band and the jazz quartet Jeru, the Mulligan Mosaics Nonet is an ensemble comprised of top jazz and classical musicians and is co-led by saxophonist Ted Hogarth and bassist Joe Policastro. The ensemble was formed to commission new music and preserve and perform classic third-stream works by composers such as John Lewis, Gil Evans, Jimmy Giuffre, Shorty Rogers, Gunther Schuller, George Russell, Gerry Mulligan, Chico Hamilton, and Manny Albam. The ensemble seeks to balance jazz, classical, and modern art music and serves as a creative outlet for its diverse arrangers, composers, and performers.
Members: Art Davis, trumpet; Chris Madsen, alto sax; Michael Buckwalter, french horn; Tim Coffman, trombone; Ted Hogarth, bari sax; Sean Whitaker, tuba; Kevin Fort, piano; Joe Policastro, bass; Bob Rummage, drums
In March of 2011 as part of Miles Davis Fest, the ensemble performed for a week at the Jazz Showcase performing Miles Davis' "Birth of the Cool" in its entirety and premiered new music inspired by the landmark recording featuring works by Joe Clark, Chris Madsen, Kevin Fort, Bryant Scott, and Joe Policastro.
